Italian Wines are classified in four categories:
Vino da Tavola
The lowest classification of Italian Wine. The wine is made by Italian Grapes in Italy, nothing more.
Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT)
The wine is made in a particular Italian Region. Many Super Tuscan fall in this category because of the blend of the grapes (Cabernet Savignon & Sangiovese).
Denominazione d’Origine Controllata (DOC)
The wines are made in a particular area designated for DOC Wines and should be made by specifics grapes varieties.
Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)
The “cream” of DOC Wines in terms of more stringent regulations and quality standard.
